What Grade Is 15 Out of 20? Score-to-Letter Table
15 out of 20 is 75% — a C on the standard scale (D+ strict, B- lenient). The formula plus the X-out-of-Y table: 7/10, 13/15, 18/20, 23/25, 45/50 and more.
15 out of 20 is 75% — a C on the standard scale, a D+ on a strict 7-point scale, and a B− on a lenient one. Any score converts the same way: earned ÷ total × 100, round to one decimal, then read the letter off the scale’s thresholds. The table below runs the most-asked fractions on the standard scale (A− = 90, B = 83, B− = 80, C = 73, C− = 70, F below 60).
The X-out-of-Y table, standard scale

| 8/10 | 80.0 | B− |
| 9/10 | 90.0 | A− |
| 11/15 | 73.3 | C |
| 13/15 | 86.7 | B |
| 14/15 | 93.3 | A |
| 15/20 | 75.0 | C |
| 17/20 | 85.0 | B |
| 18/20 | 90.0 | A− |
| 19/20 | 95.0 | A |
| 20/25 | 80.0 | B− |
| 22/25 | 88.0 | B+ |
| 23/25 | 92.0 | A− |
| 24/25 | 96.0 | A |
| 25/30 | 83.3 | B |
| 30/40 | 75.0 | C |
| 36/50 | 72.0 | C− |
| 45/50 | 90.0 | A− |
| 60/75 | 80.0 | B− |
| 70/100 | 70.0 | C− |
The one gotcha: the same 75% wears three letters
The percentage is objective — the letter isn’t. Watch one score move across the three scale families:
| scale | 75% lands on | where the pass line sits |
|---|---|---|
| standard (10-pt) | C | D− at 60% |
| strict (7-pt) | D+ | D− at 70% |
| lenient | B− | D− at 50% |
All three scales’ full thresholds are printed in letter grades explained — check yours before quoting a letter to anyone, because “what grade is X out of Y” only has one answer per scale.
For totals the table doesn’t cover
The grader on the home page takes any total from 1 to 200, prints the entire wrong-count chart with letters and GPA points, highlights your student’s row, and handles half-point deductions — plus a Print chart button for the paper version.
Weighted gradebooks are a different operation — a 75% on a test isn’t worth 75% of the course grade. That math lives in weighted vs points grading.
Frequently asked questions
What grade is 7 out of 10?
70% — a C- on the standard scale. That's also the most instructive answer here: 7/10 feels like 'mostly right' but lands barely above failing on a 10-point scale, and it's a flat F on a strict 7-point scale where the pass line is 70.
Is 75% a C?
On the standard 10-point scale, yes — 75% sits between C (73) and C+ (77). On a strict 7-point scale it's D+; on a lenient standards-based scale it's B-. The percentage is objective; the letter depends entirely on which scale the class uses.
How do I grade a test with 43 questions?
Each question is worth 100 ÷ 43 ≈ 2.33 percentage points — so 5 wrong is 38/43 = 88.4% (B+). For any odd total, run earned ÷ total × 100, or drop the count into the grader — it prints the full chart for totals up to 200.
Does 89.5% round up to an A-?
On this site, no — percentages are rounded to one decimal first, and 89.5 stays 89.5, a B+. Whether a teacher should round is a syllabus decision; the rule that matters is applying one convention identically to every student. More in letter grades.
How do half-point deductions work?
A half-point off means the 'earned' column can end in .5 — 14.5/20 = 72.5% (C-). The main tool's half-point mode handles this directly, so quarter-wrong deductions on a 20-question test still land on the right row.
